Merry Christmas 2011 from Castawaykuopus

We woke up on Dec. 20th and found that the ship had been secretly decorated in the night by the staff. This is  the beautiful staircase down to deck 4. We are on our way to our safari in Richard's Bay, South Africa. Merry Christmas from CastawayKuopus!

Local woodcarving artist in Mauritius added a few Santa hats to his creations.
Merry Christmas to all blog readers!
The morning we left the ship, these lovely gingerbread houses appeared near the Grand Dining Room! There were 17 chefs on the ship, so I imagine that they spent a part of the previous evening creating this beautiful display for those guests who were about to board the ship for the next cruise to Singapore. The smell of gingerbread was startling!

We're settled in our apartment in Cape Town, South Africa. The owner of our apt. picked us up on the morning of the 22nd from the dock near our ship. It was a rainy day, so she took us for a drive-around so we could get the "lay" of the land. Then, she took us to a car rental place and we got the only car they had left because someone had canceled. Lucky for us! We drove up to the apt., put our things away and took Alison, (our landlady) to lunch at a fish restaurant. After a nice bottle of South African white wine, delicious prawns, mussels, whitefish and french fries, we drove back to the apt. by yourselves without any mishaps. Driving on the left side of the road using a stick shift up exceedingly steep hills was very well negotiated by Bob. I was the navigator. It's was a bit unnerving with all the city traffic and roundabouts and being on the left side of some super narrow streets. We decided that it was giving us good practice for when we get to New Zealand.

We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. Here are a few Christmas photos from the ship and from a few places our ship visited. I'll be posting about Cape Town soon! We have been busy visiting wine areas, the city, the waterfront, Robbin Island and other spots in this stunningly beautiful city. Since our rainy day arrival, the weather has been wonderful... sunny and in the 70s.  Cape Town a gorgeous location and we are glad that we decided to stay for an extra week after the cruise.

Merry Merry,

  2. Merry Christmas, Mar and Bob! We just got back from visiting both families - got up at 4:30 AM! Now we need to relax. Sunny here in Denver but lots of snow on the ground and major ice on side streets. Not too conducive to exercise, though we hope to walk to Cheesman Park later. Glad you're settled in your place at Cape Town.
