News from the Cruise Part Dos...

Our ship, docked in Montevideo

Eating outdoors on board the Insignia.

I want to grow up and be a gaucho like my dad!

See... I'm already helping with the horses.

Whoa Bessie!
Cruise Line: Oceania
Ship's name: Insignia

Day 5 Montevideo, Uruguay
We had our own nice walking tour of Montevideo. No tour today. It was good fun
to return after 2 years and see some new sights in the city. We had a small pizza while
blogging at the restaurant and then spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the parks
and streets of this fast-changing town. The remodeling of Old Town and the economic growth
is inspiring to see. Uruguay has had some tough economic times over the years and now it's "on a
roll." Nice. Looks like Uruguay is moving upward.

Bob got his hair cut at a barber shop for $5.00. Later, I found a beauty shop and got a terrific
haircut for $15.00. Much cheaper than the $80.00 they charge on the ship. Canyon Ranch
has a spa on the ship so the prices are waaaaaaay too high for us. We're both "good to go" on
haircuts for awhile. Enjoy the photos of Montevideo.

Day 6 Buenos Aires, Argentina
Since we've been here twice before, we wanted to get ou of the city and see the Pampas
area. Our tour took us by bus one and a half hours north of the city to a family owned Estancia
Called La Mimosa. It rained all the way there. The Estancia dates back to 1879! It's owned by a Gaucho family. We had a traditional lunch of grilled steak with salads and bread and wine. It was
all delicious. Young gauchos preformed traditional dances and some of our group, including Bob
got picked to dance with a member of the gaucho family.  After the lunch, the rain let up, people were invited to go on a carriage ride or a short horseback ride. Of course, Bob went on a horse. The Estancia
is still a working ranch with cattle and horses. They offer tours, but their main business is growing
soy beans. The history of the gauchos is quite different from the history of the cowboys in the U.S. But, you can google to learn more about it. It is very interesting.

Day 7 Punta Del Este, Uruguay
We are back in Uruguay after an all night sail. Since there's not a big enough dock, we had to be tendered off the ship this morning to come into town. That's where I'm blogging from now. We ate
a fresh fish lunch at a seaside cafe that has wifi. We're going to do some online banking today, get some $$$ from the ATM, do some walking and see if we can find some people we met 2 years ago. It's a beautiful day. We might try to find the condo that we'll be renting on March 1st. if we have time.

Adios for awhile. I'll blog from the ship next time as we are at sea for 2 and a half days before
landing at the Falkland Island of Stanley on Jan. 23rd. Didn't have time to edit, hope all is okay!

  1. How many people are on your ship? It looks huge! The warm weather must make Bob's hair grow. Enjoy your cruise!

  2. Hi Mar, Great pic of you (cute shirt) and Roberto. Is that an authentic Gaucho in the last pic? Sounds like you're on the move. Have fun and stay safe. I think of you daily. (Xskied to the altar stump yesterday.)
