On The Big Island...

                                 The Big Island
                                                Honomu, Hawaii
Dear Blog Readers,

We've been on the Big Island for 2 weeks. We're staying with friends, in their casita (ohana in the Hawaiian language) on the outskirts of a small quaint town called Honomu (population 253). It's about 15 miles from Hilo, on the windward side of the island.

The view off of our deck and living room.

Gerry and Bev have been here for 1 year. Their plantation has 28 lush acres, set on a hillside overlooking the ocean.

and part of the greenhouse/garden area
It's a lot of work to maintain the property: growing the vegetables, picking the fruit, trimming the hundreds of plants and bushes, mowing the golf course, mowing the other areas, pulling the weeds and the general care-taking of the entire property. It is time-consuming and a lot of work. It's a jungle out there!

Happy mower Bob!
Wash the clothes and hang them out to dry in the fresh air. Nice.

Afternoon golfing break. No collared shirt needed here.

Bev driving the Kubota. It's a great hauling machine.

Gerry and Bev's latest projects are growing vegetables hydroponically and aeroponically (and in soil too) and making a 19th hole outdoor viewing deck (with solar) overlooking the beautiful stream that runs through their property. In their retirement, they've decided to become self-sustaining farmers!

Bev and some of her recent crops.

Bob's tiling project.

All finished!

Tibey is their dog.
He's deciding which banana to pick.

He loves fresh-picked  bananas!

We are enjoying time with friends. Bev and I take hikes and walks with Tibey. Exploring this old sugar plantation area has been a delight.
More to come from Hawaii, The Big Island.
Cheers,
Mary and Bob

  1. What gorgeous greenery, and I love Tibey! Mr Handyman is doing a great job. Enjoy the warmth - still snowing here in CO.
