A few days ago, we mountain biked from our apt. to Lake Hawea following a new track outside of Albert town. We had done part of this last week, but didn't make it all the way. We loved this beautiful ride that followed the river to Lake Hawea (pop. 1,200). The Tip Top hokey-pokey ice cream cone from the Lake Hawea General Store was great too. The signs were out in front of the store.
Our hike yesterday took us on the beginning part of the Meg Pack Track and Cardrona-Cromwell Pack Track. We went as far as Tuohys Saddle. It was quite windy up there and got very cold near the saddle.
This historic track was used by the gold miners. It took us on golden Central Otago tussock grassland. This gold rush area peaked in 1876 when 300 Chinese miners and 80 Europeans miners worked in the area.
The historic Cardrona Hotel Pub is still going. Now, it's filled with curious tourists and people like us---- stopping to have a Speights after a nice hike.
That old mining town reminds me of the Wild West. Soon you'll be flying home. Safe trip back. I've enjoyed your posts. Call when you get home - I'll probably be in Denver.
