Change of Geography

Summer in Wanaka, New Zealand

Hi All!
We're in beautiful Wanaka, New Zealand. We arrived via Air New Zealand (voted # 1 airline in the world). We had a great flight. We had absolutely no jet lag after a 12 hour flight. Maybe our systems are getting used to all of the long flights we've experienced lately. Air NZ lost Bob's golf bag however. We didn't panic, but thinking about the replacement cost of the clubs/shoes/balls/gloves/bags and all the hiking/biking gear we stuffed in it, we did have a few worries. It finally arrived 4 days later. Hip, Hip, Hooray! We were most thankful and grateful to the World's #1 airline for delivering it to our doorstep. We blew out a big sigh of relief.

We've been here for 5 days and the following pictures show what's happening in Wanaka and a wee bit of what it looks like from our perspective! So far we've hiked Mt. Iron twice, Bob has golfed at the beautiful Wanaka golf course twice (actually, he joined for the season) and today, I went for a nice mountain bike ride from our apartment to Lake Wanaka. We've been to the funky Wanaka cinema once to see "War Horse." We have reservations (it only seats about 30 people) for "Iron Lady" on Friday night. The 30 "seats" in the theatre are quite interesting. Some are couches, others old Air New Zealand seats and 2 people get to sit in an old yellow Volkswagen (yup, as in the whole car).

We arrived in Queenstown to drizzling rain. It rained pretty much the whole first day here. They hadn't had rain in one month, so everyone was grateful. The fire danger is EXTREME! The second night we were here, it rained all night. We woke up to a dusting of snow on all the mountain peaks. Nice. The locals kept saying... "It's summer. What is going on?"  Since that night, it has been lovely. Temps are in the low 70ºs. Today was 23ºC. Double 23. That's 46. Add 30 and that's how you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. So, it was a lovely sunny 76ºF today. The nights cool down to about 54ºF. The winds start round 5pm.

Our neighbor flies the NZ flag. I loved waking up to the snowcapped mt.  behind the flag. This snow has already melted.

This is the view from our patio looking the "other' way.

We walk from our apt. (attached to a neighborhood house) to Mt. Iron.

I love New Zealand ferns.

Lavender surrounds our house. I took this for my friend Barb... butterfly lover. Or is that a moth?

Flowering weeds are loved by bees!

  1. Just happened to come on-line and saw that you posted. What great pics! It's so beautiful there. Snow on the peaks in summer just adds to the appeal. That's definitely a butterfly - I sent it to say hello to you. I got frostbite skiing yesterday so am staying out of the gusting wind today. Haircut later. Love your views! Glad the bag was found.
