Aloha from Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i Blog Post #1

Dec. 10, 2014

Hello to our Dear Blog Readers.

Welcome back!
We're castaway this winter in the town of Princeville, on Kaua‘i, Hawai'i on the north shore of The Garden Island. Our cliffside condo overlooks the Pacific ocean on the east side (The Hawaiian word for toward the sea is Makai) of Kaua‘i. When we go outside to get in the car, we are Mauka (toward the mountain).

Morning view from our condo looking south.
We enjoy the sunrise while having our morning coffee.
The Hawaiian word for sea is Kai.
The Hawaiian word for sky or heaven is Lani.

Today, Dec. 10th is our first rainy day. It's a good day to get the laundry done, clean the condo and post the first blog.

A few Kaua‘i facts:
Beginnings: Kaua‘i is the oldest of all the Hawaiian Islands. It came into this world as hot magma
spewing up from the Pacific Ocean floor
Population: around 70,000
Size: 555 square miles (depending on the tide)
Length: 33 miles
Width:   25 miles
Coastline: 113 miles (50 miles of sand beaches!)
Highest Point: Kawaikini Peak (5,243 feet)
Largest Town: Lihue
Weather: Winter daytime temperatures from mid-70 to mid-80º F
Rain is variable (true!)
Ocean Temperatures: Between 72º and 80º F year-round
Location: In the tropics at 22º latitude and 70 miles northwest of Oahu, making it the northern most Hawaiian Island.

After arriving on Nov. 30th, we've been on the go enjoying many scenic sights of this beautiful island. Since this is known as The Garden Island, we were expecting daily rain. However, we have experienced sunny weather for over a week with one night of slight showers. Although clouds hover
over the mountains near us, the sun has been shining on the coastline.

View from the nearby Prince Golf Course Club House.

Lovely gardens everywhere.
Hues of green catch the eye.

What we like so far:
Crystal clear air, gentle but ever-constant  trade wind breezes and the moistness of the air keeping our skin soft. We also like the wide variety of landscapes with spectacular cliffs, rolling hills and
valleys full of tropical greenery and, of course the beautiful white sand beaches. Bob has already golfed 3 of the 8 golf courses on the island!

Our evening view with the calmness of the coral reef in the foreground.
The Kiluaea Lighthouse is way way in the background at the end of the cliff with the small island nearby.

Another evening view from just outside of our condo.
The crashing of the waves lull us asleep every night.

  3. Dear me, can't decide if I prefer the morning or the evening view! It's cold, windy and rainy here in Paris and I can't help being a tad envious of your sunshine! Oh well, my time will come and Burma is but a bit more than a month away. Enjoy your discoveries! Cox, Beth
