The Upper Clutha river and some fabulous clouds to add to the great scenery.
While Bob was golfing the other day, I mountain biked the Upper Clutha River trail and around Albert Town (just below our apartment). It was a warm day and later afternoon, so biking by the river was nice and cool. I went uphill on the new track to see what it was like, got some good views, but came back down to the river as it was too warm to ride along the ridge on the exposed track. I wanted some shade. One day soon, Bob and I plan to bike the new track all the way from Wanaka to Luggate (a quaint old town with an historical pub) for lunch. We’ll pick a cooler day and/or get an early morning start.

What you can and cannot do on the Upper Clutha Track. That's me... third from the top, going down the hill!

Besides biking, I have to do a little weight lifting in the middle of the bike ride.

This is the Clutha River... fabulous trout fishing and scenic mountain biking riding along her track.

Yesterday, Bob and I went hiking over near Cardrona, an old gold mining town near the Cardrona ski area. The highway is the back way to Queenstown on the Crown Road. We did a bit of this hike 2 years ago, but wanted to see if we could get to Meg’s Hut this time. We made it to Tuohys Saddle. The wind was wild! Luckily we had a tailwind on the uphill, but without any trees for protection, it did blow hard up near the saddle. We’ll have to go back another day. We had a nice lunch away from the wind. Afterwards, we drove over to the historical Cardrona Tavern and had a Speights beer before driving back to Wanaka.

We were hiking on the other side of this range yesterday. Changed overnight.
And yes, it is summer in New Zealand!

It was windy, cool (in the high 60s I’m guessing) cloudy with some sun... perfect weather for hiking uphill. However, a storm blew through Wanaka last night and this morning we woke to snow on the high areas. We can see the area where we hiked from our apartment and it was all covered with snow. We were glad that the bad weather did not arrive until evening.

Cheers to a good hike! (Hi to our Texas/Eagle Harbor friends Andi and Sam who were standing in this same spot several months ago during their New Zealand travels.) I'll have a Speights mate.
We had a nice 31/2 hour hike. Tired and happy hikers.
