In New Zealand, you tramp, i.e. hike. We could call ourselves the transplanted trampers instead of the happy hikers!
At the heart of Wanaka is a pristine lake. The lake and spectacular mountain backdrop makes it an ideal spot; perfect for hiking/tramping/walking or bicycling. It's one of the reasons why we fell in love with this area and are here for three months.

Recently, starting from near downtown Wanaka, we tramped for about three and a half hours along one of Lake Wanaka’s winding shoreline tracks from Roy’s Bay to Damper Bay, across Waterfall Creek and over re-vegetated terraces above Lake Wanaka. We had superb views along the way. We stopped to admire the lake and mountain views, water the new plants and had a picnic lunch at a picturesque spot by the water.

Lake Wanaka is 45 Km long and up to 12 km wide, making it New Zealand’s fourth largest lake and the main source of the Clutha river. Lake Wanaka is 311m deep. The average water temperature is about 50ºF. There are four islands in the lake; all of them pubic reserves. Two of the islands have high conservation value as havens for plants, birds and insects that have disappeared from the adjacent mainland due to predation by stoats, rabbits, possums and cats.

The lake and mountain views from that track are awesome. Glad you're helping to water the landscape. Denver got all the snow! (We only got an inch...)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely stunning scenery! I think I'd like to go tramping sometime in New Zealand. Love your blog. Happy trails to you both.
