Still Living the Dream... 2015-2016

                           "On The Road Again…"

Awesome Australia (…Oz that is!)
Australia's Flag
(in a future post, I will display the New Zealand flag. It is similar, but the Kiwis are
considering a change to their flag. Lots of controversy over it. More about that later)

                    The Castaways are Down Under.

We spent 5 days in Oz
Map of Australia
   Melbourne, Australia
Bob with Julie and Gordon.
Gordon and Bob taught together in Sale, Victoria
in 1974!

Met up with our longtime Australia friends Julie and Gordon in Melbourne. Gordon drove us around the city so that we could see some of the sights. The new area by the wharf with the modern sculpture and the high rise apartments welcomes visitors. It was a cool windy day!

The old homes have a beauty of their own… love the wrought iron that is still prevalent on many homes in the city.

Stopping in to have a drink at a typical Aussie Pub on a Friday night
is essential to a visit in OZ.
So happy to have this longtime friendship.
Then...
From Melbourne, we flew to Tasmania, the one Australian state that we have never visited. Hobart is the capital city.
The six states of Australia and their capitals are:
  • New South Wales - Sydney
  • Tasmania - Hobart
  • Victoria - Melbourne
  • Queensland - Brisbane
  • Western Australia - Perth
  • South Australia - Adelaide
  • The two mainland territories and their capitals are:
  • Northern Territory - Darwin
  • Australian Capital Territory, which is where Australia's national capital of Canberra is situated.
It was well worth the wait!

One of Hobart's (city of 200,000 people) many port areas.
The old buildings
and the new…
This ship (built in 1947) and the one behind are part of the Maritime Museum.
We spend several hours in the Museum building
 before venturing outside to
see the Museum ship collection anchored in the Harbor.
Mary and Mr. Mawson, an Antarctic adventurer.
I've always had a fascination with Antarctica.

After hiking uphill out of the city,
we caught this gorgeous view of the Tasman Bridge.

Overnight trip to Swansea and Freycinet National Park…
Super gorgeous Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park.
A nice heart-rate builder hike up to the Lookout area
gave us some absolutely stunning views of this very special secluded Bay.

Oh my!
Wineglass Bay
Happy to be enjoying the wonders of Mother Nature in Tasmania!
Scenery on the way up to the Lookout.
Swansea Bay.
Had a beautiful dinner at The Salt Restaurant overlooking the bay.
Enjoyed a glass of delicious local wine and local fish.
Spent the night at Merideth House B&B.

                       Back to Hobart
We saw many dead kangaroos alongside the roadway.
We drove during the day.

Our red rental car
(Yes, they drive on the left side!)

Santa was riding his Harley along the dock of the port.
Another wonderful day in Hobart.
Cray fishing boats in the Port.
We had a great time in Tasmania.

If you visit Australia, don't miss this charming small island state.

                    Coming soon…
                    more adventures in New Zealand.

  1. Hi Mar, Enjoyed touring with you as I'm having my morning tea. Wineglass Bay and the surrounding landscape are gorgeous. The trail to the Lookout reminded me of AZ! You both look happy and healthy. Beautiful morning here as we wait for Sam to arrive.
